3 tips to avoid the most common design trap.

When Jake and his team launched their sleek new app, they thought they’d nailed it. Months of planning, brainstorming and countless internal meetings had led to this moment. The design? Slick. The features? Plenty. The confidence? Sky high.

But there was one problem: no one used it.

The app wasn’t broken or ugly. It just didn’t solve any real problems for their customers. What Jake’s team assumed customers wanted turned out to be completely different from what they actually needed. And the feedback was brutal: “It’s confusing.” “Why does this even exist?” “Can I just go back to the old version?”

Jake’s team had made a classic mistake: they designed for themselves, not for their customers. Sound familiar? It is a trap many teams fall into.

Start with empathy, not assumptions

Do: Talk to your customers. Watch how they interact with your product or service. Ask: What frustrates you? What excites you? What’s missing?

Don’t: Design based on internal opinions and gut feelings. Remember, you are not the customer.

Tip: Replace assumptions with real insights. Customer interviews, surveys and journey mapping will help you see things through their eyes.

Design for simplicity, not flashiness

Do: Focus on solving a real problem in the most intuitive way.

Don’t: Add complexity. If customers need a manual or tooltip to figure it out, you’ve already lost them.

Tip: Keep it simple. If your customers can understand your product or service quickly without guidance, you’re on the right track.

Every interaction matters

Do: Remember that a great experience is more than just the design, it’s the entire journey. From onboarding to support to billing, every interaction counts.

Don’t: Assume a brilliant product or service will matter if the onboarding is frustrating or support feels like an afterthought.

Tip: Map the full customer journey. Identify pain points. Fix them and elevate the moments that matter.

The bottom line

When you place your customers at the heart of everything you design, magic happens.

Design with empathy. Prioritise simplicity. Be intentional about the full customer journey. You won’t just design products or services, you’ll create experiences that matter.

So next time you’re in a meeting, ask: “Are we designing this for us or for them?” If the answer isn’t “for them,” it’s time to go back to the drawing board.
